Eco Church: make a start

Eco Church: make a start

Let’s get started on something practical

Tackling climate injustice and protecting our precious environment can easily seem overwhelming! What can we change nearer to home?

Tree planting – March 2022

The spring sunshine sparkled on the River Lavant as a group from Immanuel gathered to plant over 100 trees in Westhampnett. Twenty people of all ages, (including nine children and young people) picked up spades and got digging, and created a riverside hedgerow for the future.

The idea came from a small group in the church (Peter Evans, Tim Lawrance-Owen and James Turner), who were keen to do something practical about climate change and improving our local environment – and many others turned up to make that idea a reality.

At the end of the morning, the group had planted more than 100 seedling trees creating a traditional hedgerow with hawthorn, hazel, blackthorn, dog roses, bird cherry and alder trees, which will grow to 30 feet high or more.

Some of the younger planters labelled a bird cherry or alder tree they had planted, so they can return in the future to witness how it had grown.

The trees will soon produce blossom in spring and summer, and berries and nuts in autumn.

As well as adding to the beauty of the riverside, the trees will create food and habitat for wildlife.
